“What’s your name?” I ask the male Narvian as we started walking side by side, he smiles turning his head slightly to the left to give me his full attention, “My name is Rezni Tycho.” “Nice name.” I reply looking at him then to looking ahead. He smiles in return, “Thanks.” Following Rezni closely behind, his tail swishing side to side behind him as he walked, the vast majority of alien species, including his own, watched me in awe, as I walked with him; it’s as if they have never seen a human before. I and Rezni had arrived at a nearby elevator, on the right hand side of the hanger bay, feeling a bit uneasy from all the pairs of eyes watching and following me.
The elevator doors opened automatically as we approached them, we entered as a female voice greeted us both, “Welcome, Commander Tycho, please choose a destination.” The computer said.
“Living Quarters.” He says. I see as the panel of buttons on the inner left hand side of the wall are not actual physical buttons like we have in our elevators on Earth, it’s a reasonably big sized touch screen with numbers ranging 1-200 assuming that meant the ship has two hundred decks, each button is in a blue contrast on a black back ground and other extra levels with assigned names which I had no idea what they were.
“One moment please.” Says the computers female voice, as the doors slid shut. I and Rezni stood side by side, as the elevator kicked in and it felt unusually different compared to the ones we have on Earth as it instantly got up to an incredible speed making me get butterflies in my stomach, we both stared at the stainless steel doors, he turns his head to the right, “As a future reference and tip, Ryan,” Rezni begun, “If you need to go anywhere on the ship via the elevators, just tell the computer which deck you want to go and it will select it and take you to the mentioned level.”
I nod understanding, “Sweet, I will keep that in mind.” I reply. He holds a clawed hand up putting on a more of a serious tone, “But remember some decks are off limits to civilian and unauthorized persons and are restricted to authorized persons unless permission is given access to the decks by a superior officer or of someone with authority.”
“Cool, I will make a mental note of that.” I say nodding in agreement. I could feel the elevator travelling really fast, I decided to ask Rezni about that, “They have anti-gravity generators, four on each side, which means no contact to the elevator shaft, which means less friction and more speed and there’s no need for the set up you humans use on Earth, via a counter weight, we don’t need that as the powerful anti-grav generators support the weight, therefore can make the elevator travel faster, which means getting to each deck in a relatively quick time.” He replies.
I give a low whistle, “Very advanced, I wish we had that tech.”
“Not really advanced, just practical.” He replies. There’s a TV monitor that was positioned just above the doors, giving news reports, Intel, and a counter, signifying each deck we passed. I gaze up at it, as a news report snaps on as a female Narvian news anchor appeared, “This just in, a new crew member has just arrived on the MSC Laywest, rumoured to be a male human who goes by the name of Ryan Mendoza, he has joined on the behalf of Commander Lizareth Draconian, the Sentient Alliance and it’s colonies, space stations and ships, wishes Ryan a warm welcome, please if you see him, make him feel welcomed and a part of the Alliance.” My eyes fell back to the elevator doors but in my peripheral vision I watch Rezni gaze at me, I turn my head as my eyes met his, “Looks like you’re gonna be famous, Ryan.” He says winking at me. “I don’t see how, I only just got here.” “You’ll have to wait and see, she just announced you to the whole galaxy.” I gulped nervously looking back up at the monitor, as I had my attention at the TV monitor, Rezni spoke up, “I will teach you everything you need to know, Ryan, about living on this ship, where to go, what places to visit.” He replies softly.
“Thank you, Rezni, that means a lot and much appreciated.” I reply.
He smiles, showing his sharp teeth, as the elevator began to slow down and gradually stopped, “Arriving at Deck 57, Living Quarters.” Announced the computer, as the doors parted, revealing brand new scenery to me that looked almost familiar in a way.
What was revealed to me is a long corridor, it was wide, about four or five metres wide, but it looked like the corridor you would see in a hotel, doors lined each side of the corridor which kept going onwards, each door evenly spaced out.
“Follow me, Ryan, you’re quarters is this way.” He says exiting the elevator, as he starts walking ahead of me. I exit the elevator, hearing the doors close behind me, trailing behind Rezni. Walking behind Rezni, my eyes drifted to his tail and behind, as his tail swished side to side, in an alluring manner. I shook my head to regain my composure, getting those thoughts out of my head, looking at each door that goes by, taking note of the numbers on them. They read LQ-1, LQ-2, LQ-3 and so on. Walking past many doors, he spoke up, “You will be residing in LQ-35,” he says as we walk on down the corridor.
We kept on walking along the left hand side of the hallway as I counted the numbers in my head as we near my quarters, ‘LQ- 32, LQ-33, LQ-34.....LQ-35’ we arrived at my personal quarters. “Here we are, Ryan your own personal quarters.” He says smiling.
I noticed there is a control panel on the right hand side of the door; it looked like a touch-screen with many buttons on it, it was black with the buttons being holographic blue. Many of the buttons read, DOOR BELL, DOOR, and a keypad, ranging from the numbers 1-9.
“These quarters were specifically and specially picked for you as you’re our honoured first human and newest crew member” He says
He accesses the keypad, typing in a code, as the grey coloured steel door opened with an electronic ‘swoosh’.
“After you,” he says gesturing to the opened door, I give him a nod as I walk on through; the sight of the room astonishes me.
He follows me inside as I gaze around the room; it was like a house in a sense but on a smaller scale. I start walking around, exploring my own quarters. Three nice big bedrooms, along with a big kitchen and two bathrooms, the second being connected to the master bedroom. As I walk around I encounter a home theatre, the theatre style rows of chairs with a big screen TV, damn these quarters has everything like a full sized home would have. “Your pre-arranged package is that for a single male of my species, since they resemble humans the most when it comes to physiology, that meaning the structure of our bodies and how they are built, ‘cough’ except for our genitals… ‘Cough’” I stop mid-exploring my quarters as I raise an eyebrow at him giving him a weird look.
“Depending on one’s species,” he continued, “each living area is tailored specifically to the species of the person or people using it. So each quarters you walked past on the way here, would vary and be very different from each other.”
“Very interesting, it’s a really cool procedure and setup you have for the many species you have currently living on the ship.” I reply. “It works is what matters.” What caught my eye next was the amazing window that was situated on the far wall of the quarters, on the right hand side; I walked up to it as I stood a few centimeters from it, resting my hands on my hips.
The window was massive, it basically filled the whole wall, you could consider it to be the wall it was that big, reaching the ceiling and being level with the floor. But the view was majestic, showing a clear view of the dark void of space, the stars and galaxies shining bright to their fullest extent, the Milky Way Galaxy in full view.
“Great view isn’t it?” says Rezni, as he walks up to the window and stands beside me.
I sigh, “Yeah, it is.” I reply grimly.
“Ryan, are you okay?” he asks in a concerned tone. “Yeah, I’m fine; I don’t want to talk about it.” I reply, as I lean a hand on the window.
He nods silently, “Well, if that’s that, I will show you the rest of the features of your quarters.” He says gesturing me to follow.
I follow him, he gestures to a touchpad control panel, adjacent to the door, “This control panel, which is a holographic touch screen, controls the lights, the heating and air-conditioning, it also adjusts the brightness or you can ask the computer to do it for you.”
I nod understanding, “That’s really cool, great tech, so you can ask the computer to change the brightness of the lights, and the heating and cooling?”
“Yes, just ask the computer what you want it to do and it will do it.”
He points to a nearby console computer situated on a desk near the living room, “That computer console situated on that desk, is the mainframe, it’s the main computer to use in order to find out information, receive messages from crew members, contact other crew members, video calls, news alerts, information alerts and so on, there are certain features the computer has that requires special privileges.”
“Sweet, what features would require special privileges?” I ask, stroking my chin. “Well, like connecting and using the ships main PA system, it is used only by high ranking individuals with specific clearances, valuable information, addresses, announcements, emergencies and calling on crew members and contacting crew members.”
“Ah, I see, so the ships main PA system, you talk to the whole ship?” I ask.
“Yes, everyone on the ship will hear anyone make an announcement on the PA system.”
I look around, taking in everything that was situated in my quarters, three big couches situated in the centre of the room, facing towards a big black screen assuming that is the TV, the couches were big enough to hold six people each and a coffee table situates between the couches and TV.
The floors were lined with blue carpet, except for the kitchen and bathrooms, which were lined with white tiles.
A large dining table situated near the kitchen, which can fit 12 people, my eyes drifted to the area near the door, located there were all my belongings, my suit cases, duffle bags and my guitar case.
“Well, that sums up the tour of your quarters.” Says Rezni, making his way to the door, “Do you have any questions, Ryan?” he asks me, turning around to face me as I followed him to the door.
“Who else lives in the quarters that are next to me and along the hallway?” I ask. “The majority of the people you have met live in these quarters near you, for an instance, my quarters is not far from yours, it’s just down the hall on the left in LQ-46, same side as yours. We just walked past Lizareth’s quarters; she’s in LQ-15 on the right, Telic’s is LQ-67, which is all the way down the hall on the left.”
“Cool, I will keep that in mind.” I say. “Remember, if you need any of us, just come knock on our doors, or call us on the comm, we will help you with anything you need or come to your aid.” He says giving me a wink.
“Thanks, Rezni means a lot.” “Well, I have duties to attend to, when you have time, go and meet the captain of the ship on the bridge.”
“And where is that?” I ask. “The bridge is located on Deck One; take any elevator up there, he is eager to meet you.” “Of course he is, I guess I’m the new celebrity around here.” I say.
“Well, you are human after all.”
“Point taken.” “Well, I must be off, take care Ryan, I will let you settle in, remember if you need me, use that computer there.” He says pointing to it. I nod, “Will do.”
He walks to the door as it ‘whooshes’ open, “Oh and if you’re hungry, the mess hall is located on Deck Three.”
“Sweet, thank you for everything Rezni.” He gives his hands out, “Hey, just helping out a nice human.”
“See yah around, Ryan.” He says, turns on his heels and walks out, the door closing behind him, leaving me there in silence.
I clasp my hands together, “Well, better start unpacking.” I walk to the futuristic looking dresser, which had buttons and keypads on it. I reached behind me, taking my pistol out of my waist band and placing it on the dresser, I look towards the second bathroom, ‘Hmm, might have a refreshing shower.’
♦♦♦
I walk out, towelling myself off, with nothing on but my jeans, my toned abs and muscular forearms in full view.
A knock sounded at the door, I perk up at the door, I throw my towel onto my bed as I make my way to the door.
“Who is it?” I ask.
“It’s Lizareth, may I come in?” came the reply. “Sure, it’s not locked.”
The door opened revealing Lizareth standing there, looking ashamed. She had changed into an officer’s uniform; her uniform was blue with shades of red, a t-shirt with a button up collar, the collar was red as with the sleeves, whilst her pants were the same type of blue but with shades of red etched on the base of her trouser legs. Her rank insignia is represented by two silver clovers leafs on each end of her collar, on her sleeves; the insignia shoulder pauldrons on her sleeves is a single gold star above three gold lines, it is the exact reminiscent of the commander rank of the US Navy.
I waved her in, “Come in.” She walked in slowly as the door slid shut behind her; she took notice of me without a shirt on, as she stares in awe at me, her jaw dropping slightly.
She looked away shyly, I grin at her, “What?” I say putting my hands out.
“You have no shirt on.” She says. “So?” “So, can you please put a shirt on?” she says insistently.
“I thought you wouldn’t mind seeing these.” I reply flexing my biceps. She looks at me again with the corner of her eye, taking a peak at me, as she quickly shies away again.
“Ryan, can you put your shirt on. What I have to talk to you about is really serious.” She says in a harsh tone.
“Fine, if you insist.” I reply, walking to my duffle bag full of clothes, pulling out a plain black t-shirt, throwing it on.
“There, is that better? I’m dressed, so what did you come to talk to me about?” I ask. She turns around to face me, making eye contact with me. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, her tail slowly swishing side-to-side.
“I want to say I am so deeply sorry for lashing out at you like I did earlier, you didn’t deserve it. I reacted like that because...”
“...Because your mate was shot by a human wielding the same type of gun that I currently possess.”
A shocked look came over her, “How do you know?” she asks. “Telic told me.” I reply.
“Did he now? Well, now you know that I have a massive distaste for your weapons. But as you’re an amazing human and a great friend of mine I can make an exception. I brought you here to have a new life, to make a new life, a fresh start so to speak, me taking my anger out on you isn’t going to help you settle in, my outburst was uncalled for and I... am so deeply...” she chokes back on a few tears “...sorry, Ryan, I thought you would be pissed off at me and never forgive me.”
“Lizareth I forgive you, I didn’t know, if I had of known I wouldn’t have brought my own gun with me. I would never be mad at you, ever, I will always forgive you.”
A light smile forms on her face, as a few tear drops roll down her cheek. I walk up to her as I place a hand on her shoulder, “Do not beat yourself up about your outburst at me, it’s done and gone, we move on, there will be times in the future where we will have our arguments and disagreements and fights, but we move on from them.”
She nods, “Yeah, of course.” She takes a shaky breath. I take my hand off her shoulder, as she stares at me. “Hey, I can’t be angry at the person who has promised me a new life.”
She smiles, I smile back. “Were you on your way somewhere?” she asks.
“Very observant, why do you ask?” “Well, it looked like you were getting ready for something before I arrived.”
“I was getting ready to head to the bridge to meet the captain.”
“Who suggested that?” she asks. “Rezni did.” “He does have a point; it would be good for you to meet the captain of this ship.”
I nod, “It would be nice, getting acquainted with the person in charge of this ship.” “Are you going alone?” she asks. “Are you offering?” “Well... you are new here, so you aren’t really familiar with this ship yet and which routes to take to the many decks it has.”
“Offer accepted.” I say raising an eyebrow. “Well, let’s head to the bridge.” She says making her way to the door.
The elevator doors opened automatically as we approached them, we entered as a female voice greeted us both, “Welcome, Commander Tycho, please choose a destination.” The computer said.
